Aerodrome flight information officer — employer requirements guide
On this page — jump to a section
An aerodrome flight information officer provides information and alerting-related support in a locally defined service. This is not simply a different title for an air traffic controller. Avinor and Turks and Caicos examples show that the workplace, training route and additional weather duties depend on the employer and national framework. [EMP1, EMP2]

Actual employer examples — keep each country and notice separate
Essential, desirable and other conditions retain the author’s source classification. An empty category means no separate requirement was established in the reviewed source, not that employers have no requirements. Historical or closed notices are examples, not current vacancies.

Norway; September 2026 regulatory change
CAA Norway reports that the new AFIS competence regulation took effect on 1 September 2026, replacing several earlier rules. Some training-organization and other-personnel provisions have transition dates to 1 June 2027. Verify the current framework and transitional application rather than relying on an older training brochure. [REG1]
Official announcement of BSL C 3-4, effective 1 September 2026, with transition provisions.
Limitations
Announcement checked; not a complete assessment of an individual authorization route. Official page is in Norwegian.
Unresolved research and applicability
Turks and Caicos current individual authorization requirements are not fully reviewed; its employer example is historical.
Explore a possible entry route
Choose the country and exact service before comparing courses. Write down whether the role is AFIS, another information service or ATC; similar workstations do not establish the same responsibilities.
Separate school or language admission conditions from medical, security and professional authorization. Refer personal eligibility questions to the relevant organization rather than interpreting an overseas advertisement as a global rule.
Compare the training contract, supervised practice, placement and final assessment. Ask what happens if a required assessment is not passed and what commitments continue after training. Use current published terms, not promises inferred from a historical vacancy.
Learning exercises — not proof of professional competence
Create a factual observation log about a safe public setting such as a library entrance. Separate what you observed from what you assumed, and identify what you could not verify. Do not use an aerodrome or imitate operational watchkeeping.
Prepare a short non-aviation handover for a fictional event. Include a change, its source and an unresolved question; ask another reader to identify wording that could be misunderstood.
Preparation prompts — not reported interview questions
Preparation prompt, not an actual interview question: what differences would you investigate before treating AFIS training as equivalent to a controller programme? Explain where you would check rather than guessing the applicable powers.
Prepare a genuine example of communicating an inconvenient fact clearly and respectfully. Explain how you checked accuracy and why you avoided filling an information gap with an assumption.
Progression to investigate
Investigate instruction, remote-tower work or local supervision only against the applicable competence and experience requirements. Transfer to another site or to ATC is a separate authorization and selection question.
