Technical specialists support systems and their dependencies
CNS capabilities support services; technical and operational roles remain distinct.
Communications supports voice and data exchange. Navigation supports position and path information. Surveillance supplies traffic information. Air navigation services use these connected capabilities. Technical specialists support the systems and dependencies such as power, networks and facilities. This functional relationship is not a universal organizational chart, a claim that one capability replaces another, or a technical procedure.

Actual employer examples — keep each country and notice separate
Essential, desirable and other conditions retain the author’s source classification. An empty category means no separate requirement was established in the reviewed source, not that employers have no requirements. Historical or closed notices are examples, not current vacancies.
[EMP1] EUROCONTROL — System Controller, NOC-MA-2026-OP/1150
Required and advantage headings; employment conditions explicitly describe post-selection training.
Employer essential requirements
EQF5-or-higher post-secondary education plus three years relevant experience.
Experience of first-line incidents/ITIL, technical procedures and monitoring complex safety-critical systems.
English C1, Member State nationality and ability to work the stated 24/7 roster.
Employer desirable requirements
Understanding ATS/data provision and core IT infrastructure.
Other stated conditions
Successful candidates train for internal competence, ATSEP and primary-intervention certification; these are not all stated as pre-entry certificates. Security vetting may apply.
Duties supported by this example
Continuous ATM/CNS monitoring, incident coordination and technical reporting.
This specific employer example is not a worldwide entry rule. A closed or undated example is not an invitation to apply.
Official legal, licensing and occupational context
Employer preferences are not automatically law. Official guidance and occupational descriptions are not necessarily binding rules. Each source’s jurisdiction, scope and gaps below remain separate.
EU framework — applicable ATSEP duties
Part-PERS describes provider-managed training and competence assessment. System/equipment authorisation is duty-specific, not a worldwide transferable personal licence. The source compilation is older than amendments listed in the current index.
EUROCONTROL Maastricht — this vacancy
This vacancy includes post-selection training for internal certification. Recruitment alone does not authorise operational duties.
Training and competence framework for personnel performing relevant ATSEP duties.
Limitations
March 2025 compilation. Later amendments are listed in the EASA index, including 2025/2293 and 2026/2031; this is not represented as a complete October 2026 consolidation.
Index includes amendments subsequent to March 2025.
Limitations
Individual legal applicability and amendment effects require competent-authority or specialist confirmation.
Unresolved research and applicability
Only one specific employer example has been verified. Later EU amendment effects have not been exhaustively consolidated; task-level applicability must be confirmed by the provider and competent authority.
Explore a possible entry route
Read the actual technical-watch duties before comparing this career with ATC. Familiarity with aviation terminology can help orientation, but it does not replace the technical experience and competence assessment in the example.
Identify genuine evidence of disciplined incident handling in comparable complex systems. The vacancy accepts relevant non-aviation safety-critical experience, not any IT background.
Review the practical effect of a rotating roster on your own life without collecting or sharing sensitive health information. Ask the employer how handovers, training, support and fatigue-related policies are handled.
Treat internal training as a supervised qualification process, not an administrative formality. Before choosing a private ATSEP course, verify whether the target organisation recognises it and what further local assessments remain.
Learning exercises — not proof of professional competence
Write a fictional incident handover for a harmless classroom application: what was observed, what is confirmed, what remains uncertain, who was informed and which action is pending. Do not include commands or procedures for real aviation systems.
Create a simple service-dependency diagram with invented components. Practise explaining why one alert may affect several users, while carefully separating a hypothesis from a verified cause.
Prepare a short reflection on working within an assigned role during a team project. Show when you requested help instead of changing something beyond your authority.
Preparation prompts — not reported interview questions
Use a genuine example of maintaining accurate communication under time pressure. Explain how you prioritised information and checked understanding without claiming operational aviation experience.
Ask about the initial training and assessment sequence, continuing competence, roster arrangements and the boundary between monitoring, first-line intervention and specialist maintenance. These prompts are educational, not leaked interview questions.
Progression to investigate
Possible directions include technical supervision, incident/service management, training or systems engineering. Each has separate experience and competence expectations; a technical-watch role does not automatically lead to an ATC licence.
