Flight instructors teach and assess learning within the privileges of their instructor and pilot qualifications. They are not simply experienced pilots who decide to teach, and classroom, simulator and in-aircraft posts can have different requirements. This example is a US college flight-instruction appointment; academic hiring conditions are not automatically aviation-law requirements.

What the work involves
Plan and deliver instruction appropriate to the assigned course.
Observe learning, provide feedback and maintain accurate progress records.

Actual employer examples — keep each country and notice separate
Essential, desirable and other conditions retain the author’s source classification. An empty category means no separate requirement was established in the reviewed source, not that employers have no requirements. Historical or closed notices are examples, not current vacancies.
[EMP1] Sinclair Community College — Aviation Flight Instructor — Part-Time (Adjunct) Faculty, 05504
Explicit required and preferred lists; alternative academic routes retained rather than made cumulative.
Employer essential requirements
High-school diploma; commercial single-engine-land certificate with instrument rating and CFI for the assignment.
Also meet one approved route: five years relevant professional/teaching experience; or 30 applicable college semester credits plus demonstrated teaching qualifications; or comparable relevant preparation accepted by the college.
Employer desirable requirements
Relevant associate/bachelor degree, additional instructor/pilot ratings and successful instructional experience.
Other stated conditions
Work must be in an approved state (Ohio, Indiana or Kentucky). The full notice requires documentation and background checks; department/dean approval governs alternative academic routes.
Duties supported by this example
Teaching, learner assessment and progress records.
Selected conditions from this employer and role only; not a complete eligibility checklist or worldwide rule.
Official legal, licensing and occupational context
Employer preferences are not automatically law. Official guidance and occupational descriptions are not necessarily binding rules. Each source’s jurisdiction, scope and gaps below remain separate.
United States — exercising instructor privileges
Section 61.197 makes recent experience a condition of exercising instructor privileges and specifies recognised routes. Possessing a certificate is not, by itself, evidence that every instructional privilege is current. The college’s academic qualification alternatives are separate from FAA certification; initial eligibility and the exact instructional scope require independent checking.
Recent-experience conditions for exercising flight-instructor privileges.
Limitations
Title 14 displayed current through 23 October 2026. Initial eligibility, rating privileges, medical applicability and school-specific rules are not fully consolidated here.
Unresolved research and applicability
One fully verified specific employer. Other university notices were unavailable and a Qatar page failed twice; no snippet-only requirements were used. Initial-eligibility section access was challenged and not bypassed; complete legal applicability remains unresolved.
Explore a possible entry route
Identify the exact instructional assignment: ground instruction, simulator training, initial flight teaching or an experienced standardisation role. Similar instructor titles do not establish identical certificate privileges or teaching responsibilities.
Compare the authority qualification pathway with the employer’s academic and experience criteria. Record which alternatives the employer actually permits, what must be approved and what remains only preferred. Do not assume a college hiring exception waives an aviation requirement.
Develop teaching ability through legitimate supervised opportunities and feedback. Before paying for instructor training, verify the provider, qualification sought, assessment and recency obligations. Ask the intended employer how new instructors are mentored and authorised for each assignment.
Learning exercises — not proof of professional competence
Teach a short non-aviation topic to a willing peer, state a learning objective and ask them to explain it back. Record feedback and one improvement without calling this professional flight-instructor experience.
Create a fictional learner-progress record that distinguishes observed performance, feedback and next learning goals. Use invented data and avoid real medical or student records.
Preparation prompts — not reported interview questions
Preparation prompt: describe a time your first explanation did not work. Explain how you checked understanding and changed your approach instead of blaming the learner.
Prepare questions about supervision, instructional scope, assessment standards and how certificate recency is verified. These are not reported college interview questions.
Progression to investigate
Investigate additional instructional ratings, standardisation or training leadership as separate pathways. Examiner and chief-instructor appointments have further conditions and are not automatic consequences of teaching experience.
